Northern Virginia, also known as “NOVA”, is a group of counties and independent cities located in the Commonwealth of Virginia. This region ranges southerly and westward from Washington, D.C., the capital of the United States. There are about 2.8-million people living in Northern Virginia which is about one-third of the state, so it is the most populous area of both Virginia and the Washington, D.C. Metropolitan Area. Northern Virginia is also the highest-income area of the Commonwealth of Virginia with five of the highest-income counties in the country: Loudoun, Fairfax, Arlington, Stafford and Prince William. Alexandria and Falls Church also have notably high median incomes, but these are independent cities. Located right next door to the nation’s capital, there are some incredible homes for sale in Northern Virginia. Each county and city located within the region’s limits has its own unique history and charm, not to mention the diversity of Northern Virginia real estate that lies inside of each town.
Fairfax County is the largest county in the Washington D.C. Metropolitan Area, the third wealthiest county in Virginia and the most populated county in the state with over one-million residents. It’s located both inside and outside of the beltway and includes the cities of Falls Church, Reston, Tyson’s Corner, McLean, Fairfax, Oakton, Springfield, Burke, Annandale, Chantilly, Centreville and Clifton. Falls Church ranked number one on a list of Virginia’s 5 richest counties in 2015. Tyson’s Corner was called the 12th largest employment center in the nation by the New York Times in 2008 and is now the county’s central business district. Fairfax in general attracts wealthy homebuyers with a wide variety of monumental Fairfax homes that are full of history. Families enjoy the walkable neighborhoods, well-manicured landscaping and fine selection of affordable starter homes the area has available. The excellent schools just about seal the deal for most. Fairfax is only 16 miles from the nation’s capital, so the amenities and recreational opportunities are truly endless for this community.
Loudoun County was listed as the wealthiest and fastest growing county in the United States, but then it dropped to number two in 2014 nationally and statewide. Not to worry, for Loudoun jumped right back on top as the wealthiest county in the nation yet again. Loudoun’s history is rich and dates back to colonial times when the Revolutionary War took place, so there are many Civil War and Colonial era Loudoun County homes. Loudoun County communities include: Sterling, Ashburn, Potomac Falls, Countryside, Middleburg, South Riding, Hamilton and Dulles International Airport. Most residents are able to see incredible views of the Shenandoah Mountains. Washington D.C. is just 45 miles away, but Loudoun County still keeps its own spirit of individuality with a variety of historic downtowns, suburban housing and business complexes.
Arlington County and the city of Alexandria are both close to Washington, D.C. inside of the beltway. Alexandria is only seven miles south of downtown Washington, D.C. and is home to one of America’s first designated historic districts, Old Town. Arlington County is home to the second-largest principal city in Virginia, the city of Arlington. Stafford County was established in 1664 and is filled with almost 350 years of stories, historic accounts and the beauty of nature. Fauquier County sweeps you away to rural tranquility. The hustle and bustle of city living melts away into Virginia’s Horse and Wine Country. Fauquier County sits at the base of the Blue Ridge Mountains only 40 miles away from Washington, D.C., so living here offers peaceful living within arm’s reach of the big city.

Northern Virginia has a variety wineries, golf courses, small-town historic districts, parks and preserves, shopping districts, Northern Virginia real estate and so much more. The proximity to the nation’s capital, the Blue Ridge Mountains and several hot vacation spots amidst miles of countryside living gives Northern Virginia residents a significant advantage. One shouldn’t have to choose between mountains and beaches or city lights and country skies. After all, there’s no need to choose when you can have all of that and more.
